September Newsletter

God with us.

"I am very big. I am very loud." Thus spake St. Julia in deep round tones, as she raised her shoulders and moved her arms slightly out from her body. She was speaking to two bear cubs and their mother bear, rather close at hand.

Only the mother bear appears in the picture below, just to the left of the rock in the upper right corner of the photo, between the two trees that appear to form a "v" on the right. The bear cubs had been on top of the fallen tree in the foreground, a few moments before.

Earlier in the day, as we were driving through Sequoia National Park, I had had the desire to see a bear, and I prayed that we would see a bear. And so, walking along Congress Trail from the General Sherman tree, we were about half-way to our destination of Crescent Meadow, when we turned a corner, and there was a trinity of the three bears. I suppose Tertullian and St. Basil the Great would have been pleased, to find such a trinity.

Our encounter was an answer to prayer, so was seeing another bear, later in the day. They were God incidences, on the path of life.

The trail was not dangerous, and in fact, many people were walking it that day, but no one we met had seen any bears in this section, let alone three.

This was not a zoo. The bears were wild. The most pressing concern was not to get between a mother bear and her cubs, or even to look like you might be giving unwanted attention to the cubs. What you do in a situation, such as ours, is: 1) look big, 2) make noise, and 3) move away. Julie did that. It worked. The bears were very obliging.

And so, Julie, a homeschooling mother of three, had a meeting of the minds with the big bear, a homeschooling mother of two who was out on a field trip with her cubs. In the end, bears and people each went our separate ways. We had a happy ending.

We are in the midst of missionary training in California. We pray for people we meet, for our steps on the path of life, and for you all, daily. This encounter was a reminder that keeping close to God is a good idea. It is also a reminder that God answers prayer. In the photo, mother bear is looking at me. Blessings show up in unexpected ways, some times.

Please keep us in prayer for the balance of our program in California, and for the next steps on our path with Jesus.

God bless you, and thank you for your continuing support! I pray for you, every day.

Shaw+, and on behalf of Julie+.

Prayer Mail

Dear Prayer partners,
Peace be with you.
This is our public prayer mail for this week.

Thanksgivings:

1) We arrived safely in California, and the program is a great one. We have been learning about LIFO, which appears to be a really good tool for missionary and parish settings.

2) Thank you to Torre Bissell, Dcn. Greg Bailey, and others who have shared prayer requests over the internet about the flooding. I have been praying these prayer requests.

3) Thank you to Bp. Bill for his message this week.

4) For the great sermon on forgiveness at the Church we attended, today.

Prayers:

1) For our missionary program.

2) 10 years ago I was in Walton, NY, as we went through 9/11 together; and in this season of our lives, I am praying for everyone in Walton and everywhere else who has been affected by flooding.

3) That we would continue to be a blessing to all whom we encounter.

God bless you. I pray for you every day.
In Christ,

Scripture Prayer

Philippians 3: 12b – 14

…I strive to lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus also laid hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have attained this. Instead I am single-minded. Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, with this goal in mind, I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we pray that Father Shaw and Mother Julie feel your presence every step of the way as they embark on the missionary program in California. May they hear You loudly and confidently as You lead them into the next phase of their mission for You. May they be single-minded in finding out and laying hold of that purpose for which You have called them into ministry. Having learned so much from their experience in Peru, they reach out for the things that are ahead, striving toward that prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Give them special discernment, Lord, to clearly hear your call to them. Amen.

Scripture Prayer

Romans 8:28

We know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Lord, we pray for Father Shaw and Mother Julie Mudge as they prepare for their trip to California and a month long program that will help them to discern the next step in the mission to which You have called them. May they have a sense of your grand vision. Let them rest in knowledge of your love. Grant their hearts peace and may they know the joy that comes from being led by your Holy Spirit.

We pray for travel mercies. We thank You Lord that Lydia is settling into her college routine and is enjoying it. Thank You Lord for your provision. Amen.
