Lydia and Bridger Missions

Dear Friends,

We have received an inquiry as to what Lydia's missionary "Bridger" status means.

Bridger missions: SAMS has several missionary categories including the missionary bridger category. The Web page for the Bridger category can be found: HEREA Missionary Bridger generally serves up to a year (or perhaps more). The ministry length and opportunities depend on the assignment. And there are many ways one might serve as a Bridger. 

Lydia: after her Bridger missions training in Ambridge, PA, from July 20 to 23 (after which her photo would probably appear on the SAMS Bridger missionary list), Lydia plans to be serving in Honduras, perhaps as soon as September or October (recent news). Lydia is planning to help with orphans. As with any SAMS missionary, she raises funds to support her budget, and she must participate in missionary training. An advantage that Lydia has is that she has been on the mission field before (she is a second generation missionary).

Prayer Mail

Dear partners in prayer,
 
This is our public prayer mail for June 24. 
 
This week's selective overview: 

Welcome to summer in the northern hemisphere and winter in the southern hemisphere; meanwhile, dry season continues in Central America (at least, in theory).
 
I continue with ongoing projects related to Belize. On my plate at the moment: the Walk Thru Daily Office Web site, preparing for upcoming courses and updating current ones, acting as a go-between to have the Church in the Province of West Indies Book of Common Prayer completed in Spanish, helping people through the ordination process in Belize, helping get courses translated into Spanish for use throughout Central America and elsewhere (though the major push will start in August), and upcoming mission presentations to parishes in the Diocese of Albany in July, August, and September.

Our Moodle software upgrade to the newest version went well, this week. Our program is now on a server in India, and this was our first upgrade from India. Fantastic job. 

Our Connecticut base will be moving in August, and we are preparing for that. The June newsletter has more detail.

My mom is improving. Thank you for your prayers. (Keep praying)

1) Pray for all that I mentioned above, and for the preparations for (and timing of) my next trip to Belize.  
 
2) Pray for Julie and my plans; our pending move (at least two phases coming up), for Julie starting her new job at the end of June as Director of Pastoral Care for two hospitals in upstate Connecticut and the winding down of her CPE program across July. Our helping out at Trinity, Tariffville, CT, as needed.
 
3) Pray for my Mom, her plans, her doctors and their advice, our role in all of this, and for my family of origin.
 
4) Pray for Lydia as she prepares for Bridger work regarding Honduras. She has missionary training coming up in July.

June Newsletter



Post Convention June Update.

Dear friends,

The last few weeks have been momentous ones for the Mudge family.

1) Lydia has been accepted into the Bridger program with SAMS, with an eye towards working with orphans in Honduras.  She begins missionary training in the latter part of July at SAMS, and then begins her fundraising. The Bridger program is for mission work lasting from one month to a year.

2) We had an event filled Diocese of Albany Convention; one of the highlights of the Convention was "Mudge" row at the display tables: Hannah with Oaks of Righteousness (local mission), next to her was Julie and myself with SAMS (long term foreign mission, focusing on Belize), and next to us was Lydia with her display (shorter term mission) for Honduras.

And then it dawned on me.
Where is the Mudge family currently making the biggest impact for the Gospel?
Not just in missions – in all kinds of missions!
Domestic, international, longer term, shorter term, in teaching, with kids, with the poor, and with the sick.
Our family is a microcosm of the mission work of the Diocese of Albany.

3) New Models:
In missions, there is no "one formula fits all", no "one model" that works for all time. New realities mean new ways of doing things. We are creating new models, new opportunities to reach people in ways that meet the demands of the times.

And just as we create new models, we also are looking for new ways to fund those models and ourselves.

So God, Julie, and I got together, and we came up with a strategy.

What we are continuing to look at is the creative model of varying-dual-income full-time mission work. A) Part of our mission work continues to be self-funded (as in "other income from a variety of sources") and B) part continues to be support-based (continuing contributions to SAMS - i.e., we could not do it without you). It's not the 1950s any more, and while the need for reaching out with the Gospel is as great now as in any generation, the dual source of funding continues to be the way that God has decided to provide for us (every approach has its plusses and minuses, and is tailored to the mission work involved). Your support continues to be an important part of enabling us to do what we do in missions.

4)  What does this mean for us?

For Shaw: no change. I keep full time mission status with SAMS, doing the work the God has called me to do in the mission field.  Missions is my full-time vocation. I plan to touch base with congregations and other clergy from the Diocese as I have in the past, to continue to spread the word about what God is doing.  When I make visits, you will hear about the mission work, and such plans for the future as the expansion into Central America, and possibly elsewhere. It means a lot to us as missionaries to maintain contact with folks by way of parish visits.
Please continue to support this mission work. Please. Please. Please.

For Julie: Julie is being called into a new mission field: hospital chaplaincy.

She has accepted a position as Director of Pastoral Care at two hospitals in the Manchester area of Connecticut.  She truly sees this as fulfilling the Gospel mandate to minister to the sick.  Many people no longer connect with churches for their spiritual needs, and when they end up in the hospital or when they end up in crisis, they have no connections for the meeting of those spiritual needs.  She has spent the last year and a half training, and is now ready to enter this important mission field.

We move to the Manchester, CT area by August 15th. Her position begins on June 30th, and she continues with her CPE program into the middle of August. Shaw's missionary base camp online operations continues to follow Julie, wherever she goes.

Doing things this way enables us to continue to do international mission work (on the ground in other countries, as well as telecommuting with other countries), and at the same time will provide us with affordable health insurance.  It also allows Shaw to help take care of his aging mother.

The Diocese of Albany:  We continue to maintain our canonical status with the Diocese of Albany,  even in such far-off places as Connecticut.  In fact, we continue to be geographically closer to the diocesan offices at the Spiritual Life Center from where we will be in Connecticut than we would be if we lived in quite a few places in the Diocese of Albany.

Simply put, The Diocese of Albany is our spiritual home.  We love you guys. We need you guys.

Church:  Where will we be going to church?  We have landed in a great parish: Trinity Church in Tariffville, CT.  We will be helping out there as our other work allows.

By allowing us the privilege of spreading the Gospel and keeping you informed through presentations and newsletters, your generosity and fellowship makes you part of a strategic missionary alliance, reaching out into the community of the world. The formula is simple. We show up, God does something.

Scripture Prayer Sent June 25

Ephesians 2: 8-10

For by grace you have been saved through faith.  And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Father God, we thank You for your grace, for your son Jesus Christ, that He died for our sins, and whosoever believes in Him is saved through faith.  Works are not necessary for salvation.  But we are products of your workmanship and our faith makes us want to achieve those good works which You have prepared beforehand.

Thank You for Father Shaw Mudge and for the works You have chosen for him and in which he walks.  We pray for continued guidance for the global on-line theological training program and for spirit filled interactions with his students.

We pray for healing for Father Shaw’s mother and that all pressure is relieved in dealing with other family members and making the right decision about her care.

Blessings on his whole family, and especially on Lydia as she prepares to do Ministry in Honduras.  Help her with fund-raising, Lord, and give her everything she needs to get through training in July.

And guide Mother Julie as she starts her work in hospital chaplaincy.

We had a great anniversary. 
I continue with ongoing projects related to Belize, including the Walk Thru Daily Office Web site: here (usable, but under construction).
Just when I think the dust has settled with regards to my mom... it hasn't.  

Statistics update: 47 people have checked out our password-accessed online courses since I started keeping track. 279 people have visited our public Web site. 

Prayer requests:
1) Pray for the Belize course development work, teaching workload - including the upcoming Anglican Church History and Liturgy course that I will be teaching - starting at the end of August, ministry opportunities, people considering lay vocations: students and faculty.  Pray for the other parts of the Belizean ministry that I am involved with, as well.
2) Pray for the upcoming online learning management software upgrade. 
3) Pray for Julie and my upcoming plans.
4) Pray for my mother and my family of origin.
5) Pray for Lydia as she prepares for Bridger work regarding Honduras.

Scripture Prayer

Psalm 97: 11-12

Light is sown for the righteous and joy for the upright in heart.  Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!

As Trinity Sunday is upon us, we give thanks to the triune God.  Father, thank You for sending your Son Jesus Christ and his wonderful gift of salvation.  Thank You for sending your Holy Spirit to help us and encourage us to fulfill your mission here on earth.

Holy Spirit, continue to be with Father Shaw as he further develops the global online theological program.  Put him in touch with the right people so that his work will expand into other parts of the world and other parts of Belize.

Jesus, thank You for Lydia’s opportunity to do some mission work of her own, ministering to orphans in Honduras.  Assist her with her fund raising efforts and help her to excel when she undergoes training in the latter part of July.

Please heal Father Shaw’s mother.  Help him and the rest of his family to make the right decisions about her living situation and continuing care.  May all pressure be lifted as this matter is put in your hands, dear God.

May all of the Mudges be guided by your light.  May they have joy in their hearts as they rejoice in You, Lord, and give thanks to your holy name.

Prayer Mail

Happy season after Pentecost!  
This week's selective overview: 
  
I continue with ongoing projects related to Belize.
We enjoyed the Diocese of Albany convention, and we were pleased to catch up with as many people as we did. 
Happy Birthday to Hannah. 
Lydia has been accepted for the SAMS Bridger program, with an emphasis on working with orphans in Honduras. Her missionary training takes place in the latter part of July.
The week prior to Convention, my family of origin was working on plan A for the next phase of my mother's life. And just as Convention was about to get underway, a health issue emerged for my mom; apparently this issue has been going on for sometime, and as a result of the latest development, my family of origin has been working on plan B for the next phase of my mother's life.
Prayer requests:
1) Pray for the Belize course development work, teaching workload, ministry opportunities, people considering lay vocations: students and faculty.  Pray for the other parts of the Belizean ministry that I am involved with, as well.
2) Pray for the online learning management software upgrade. 
3) Pray for Julie and my our upcoming plans.
4) Pray for my mother and my family of origin. There is a lot going on, and a lot of pressure.
5) Pray for Lydia as she prepares for Bridger work.
6) Pray for Julie and myself as we look forward to another action packed and romantically inclined year (today is our anniversary).

Scripture Prayer

Ephesians 3: 14-19

 For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.  I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Father God, As Paul prayed for the Ephesians, so we pray for Father Shaw Mudge.  We pray that our of your glorious riches You may strengthen Father Shaw with power through the Holy Spirit in his inner being.  May Christ dwell in his heart always increasing his faith.  And being rooted and established in love, may Father Shaw and his family and his students have power to grasp and always remember how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.  May they know this love that surpasses knowledge and be filled to overflowing with all the fullness of You, God.

We send a special prayer for the Albany Diocesan Convention.  May the Mudges have some special “holy appointments”, meeting with people that can help them in their ministry.  And may they have a time of fellowship with old friends and new, and get some rest and recreation as well.  In the name of Jesus, we pray.  Amen.
