Scripture Prayer

Psalm 16: 11

You lead me in the path of life; I experience absolute joy in your presence; you always give me delight.

Father God, we pray for Father Shaw and Mother Julie as you lead them in the path of their lives. May they experience that absolute joy and delight in your presence. May Lydia have a happy birthday at Gordon College and we pray this verse for her freshman year. Lead her in the path of life, Lord. May she experience that absolute joy and delight in your presence. Amen.

Scripture Prayer

2Corinthians 4: 5-6

For we do not proclaim ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said “Let light shine out of the darkness,” is the one who shined in our hearts to give us the light of the glorious knowledge of God in the face of Christ.

We thank You Lord for the light of Jesus Christ in the lives of Father Shaw and Mother Julie and Lydia Mudge. May your light continue to shine through them as they commence new aspects of ministry. Be with Lydia as she starts her studies at Gordon College, and be with Shaw and Julie as they spend this week in Maine. Give them good weather to enjoy your awesome creation of nature. May they have a time of relaxation, reflection and renewing of their spirits, readying themselves for whatever mission You have waiting for them. Whatever they will be doing, Lord, we trust that Jesus will continue to shine in their hearts as they share their glorious knowledge of You in the face of Christ. Amen.

Prayer Mail

Dear Friends in Prayer,
Peace be with you.
This is our public prayer mail for this week and next week. (We will be on the road a lot over the next two weeks, and I do not know if I will be able to send a prayer mail next weekend.)

I am also attaching our August newsletter.

Update, during this past week:

We have been having a good time meeting with friends and family this week, and getting our home more organized. Still some ways to go.

Had a wonderful time helping the Revs. Hannah Mudge and Christina Vance with their ministry in Troy to the community on Sunday.

Prayers, for this coming week:

1) For Lydia. Her preorientation wilderness program in the Adirondacks ends about Friday. Pray for a strong ending to this Phase I of her entering college. May she be strengthened in her faith because of her experiences.

2) Phase II of launching Lydia at college begins this week. We reconnect with her in Massachusetts about the 18th, for orientation.

Pray for our part in orientation weekend at Lydia´s college, and for helping her get settled in.

Pray that she would find the college setting a place for growing spiritually. Pray that Lydia find a good church home and that she can easily set up a bank account.

3) For Julie and my travel schedule this week, to Connecticut and Massachusetts. We plan to spend several days with family and with ministry friends. Prayer for good weather would be nice.

Pray that the Lord would guide us and that we would be good witnesses for Jesus.

4) For reuniting with items which have arrived for us from South America.

Prayers for the following week:

1) For our time with family and friends in Downeast Maine.

Pray that it would not only be a time of refreshment, but also a kind of retreat: a special uplifting time of closeness, peace, and tranquility with our Lord. Prayer for good weather would be nice.

2) For Phase III of launching Lydia at college: our celebrating her 18th birthday with her about a week after orientation, in Massachusetts. Her birthday is a significant threshold for every member of our family.

We pray that Lydia would learn what she needs to learn over the next year and would grow in the power of the Holy Spirit because of her experiences in college.

Your prayers make a difference, and I pray for you daily.
God bless you.
In Christ,
Shaw, and on behalf of Julie and Lydia.

What I did on my summer vacation.

What I began to realize (as part of the missionary lifestyle) was that if I did not step back periodically, such as in taking a summer vacation, I could burn out. The result would be bad for me and for the ministry. It is true for many missionaries.

Fortunately, I am married to Julie, a wonderful young lady, who does not forget to remind me that we need to plan a summer vacation. And, boy, did she ever plan an eventful summer vacation! I sometimes wonder if we worked too hard at it....

So, what have we been doing?

1) We have been letting go.

a) We have been getting Lydia launched on the next phase of her life, life at college. That is a big "letting go." For the first time in about 28 years, we will not have one of our daughters regularly living with us.

b) Getting rid of things around the home that we do not need. Simplification of lifestyle, and hopefully getting rid of a few pounds around the waist, as well.

c) Catching up with family and friends. I have never seen so many appointments. Because of our travels over the past few years, we have not been able to see too much of our family and our friends, personally. We have made up for lost time.

In addition, during July, there was least one death on my dad´s side of the family. One of our god-daughters announced that she is expecting, and there has been a wedding on Julie´s side of our family.

2) We have been preparing for what is ahead. We will be attending a program for long-term missionaries, during the month of September. This program will put us in good stead for our meeting with our missionary society in October.

The one constant in our preparations is that Jesus is Lord, and he has at least one great missionary plan for us. That is so exciting. I am energized by it.

3) Providing food for the soul. I am in the midst of putting together a user-friendly Morning Prayer book in Spanish, for my personal daily devotions.

I have also been reading about how to implement healthy team relationships on the mission field. This is so important for ministry effectiveness.

Letting go. Preparing. Providing. That is what we have been doing on our summer vacation.

God bless you, and thank you for your continuing support! I pray for you, every day.

Scripture Prayer

Proverbs 19:21

Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

Father God, as Father Shaw and Mother Julie Mudge spend this summer in reflection about their ministry, we pray that You are guiding them every step of the way. Let the plans that are forming in their hearts be only the plans that You put there. May your purpose prevail in their lives. We pray that this be a sweet time for the Mudges, as they reconnect with family and friends. May this be a time of rest and re-creation as they wait for instruction from You. We also pray for Lydia as she continues in her wilderness experience with others from Gordon College. May she be making new friends and gathering helpful insights to help her in her college journey. Keep her safe, Lord, and help Shaw and Julie to deal with any pangs of empty nest syndrome. We thank You Lord, that You are with Lydia and that You are with her parents in every step of their lives. Amen.

Mudge Prayer

Prayer for Schools and Colleges (BCP, page 824)

O Eternal God, bless all schools, colleges and universities, that they may be lively centers for sound learning, new discovery, and the pursuit of wisdom; and grant that those who teach and those who learn may find you to be the source of all truth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eternal God, we ask that you especially bless Gordon College. Be with Lydia Mudge this week as she begins her association with this school in an Adirondack Wilderness Experience. Protect her, Lord, and let her make good friends. Lord, guide her into that study which will help her most to reach her full potential. Be with Father Shaw and Mother Julie as well, helping them to deal with an “empty nest”. Thank You Lord. Amen.
